X-Rays Q&A

What are X-rays?

X-rays, or radiographs, use small amounts of radiation and digital sensors to create pictures of your bones and/or soft tissues. The procedure is entirely noninvasive and helps your Mederi Urgent Care provider diagnose health problems and develop treatment plans.

X-rays are a standard test to diagnose broken bones (fractures). But they can also diagnose disorders and diseases like pneumonia and certain cancers.

When are X-rays recommended?

The Mederi Urgent Care team uses X-rays to:

  • Check for broken bones
  • Identify the cause of symptoms like pain and swelling
  • Look for foreign objects in the body
  • Look for structural problems with the bones, soft tissues, and organs
  • Plan and evaluate treatments
  • Provide screenings for cancer and other diseases

X-rays emit a small amount of radiation, but it isn’t enough to be dangerous. The team provides you with a protective apron to minimize your radiation exposure.

What does an X-ray involve?

Getting an X-ray is an outpatient procedure that takes 30-45 minutes.

Treatment doesn’t require special preparation, but you should avoid wearing jewelry to your appointment. Tell your provider if you have any implantable metal, like a prosthetic joint or a pacemaker.

Your Mederi Urgent Care provider asks you to sit, stand, or lie down, depending on the part of your body being X-rayed. They provide you with a lead apron that blocks the X-ray beams and asks you to remain motionless in a specific position.

Once you’re in position, your provider takes a series of X-ray images using a computer console. Don’t move and breathe lightly during the X-rays. Any movement, even slight ones, will affect the quality of the X-ray images.

After your X-rays are finished, your provider reviews them and explains the results.

How long does it take to get the results of my X-rays?

The X-ray machine develops photos instantly, so you can see the results the same day of your procedure. Your Mederi Urgent Care provider shows you the X-ray images and explains any areas of concern. If anything is found that requires medical attention, they develop a personalized treatment plan.
