Lab Services Q&A

What are lab services?

Lab services are a group of standard medical tests. They analyze bodily fluids — most often blood, urine, and saliva to gain insights into your health. The information provided by these tests can be used to treat illnesses and/or make lifestyle changes that help you feel your best.

How often should I schedule lab services?

The Mederi Urgent Care team encourages everyone to schedule lab services at least once a year as part of their annual physical.

Since many chronic health problems, like diabetes and high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), develop slowly, they don’t always present obvious symptoms. Regular lab testing allows your doctor to diagnose these problems promptly and prevent them from getting worse.

What types of lab services are there?

The Mederi Urgent Care team offers several lab services, including:

Bloodwork

Blood is a liquid but contains microscopic solids, including platelets and red and white blood cells. Bloodwork is an umbrella term for the various tests that analyze the different parts of your blood. The most commonly used blood tests include a complete blood count (CBC), basic metabolic panel (BMP), and glycated hemoglobin (A1c).

Urinalysis

Urinalysis is a lab test that analyzes a sample of your urine. It’s a quick and effective way to diagnose various health problems, including kidney disease, diabetes, and urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Stool tests

Stool tests analyze a stool sample (bowel movement) for parasites, bacteria, and blood. This test is often used to diagnose digestive problems like chronic diarrhea and norovirus. Norovirus, sometimes mistakenly called “the stomach flu,” is not an influenza virus, but it does cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Bacterial and viral cultures

A bacterial or viral culture analyzes a saliva sample for viruses and bacteria. One of the most common bacterial cultures is the streptococcus test for strep throat. Your provider collects a sample of saliva from the back of your throat and sends it to a lab for analysis.

How long does it take to get results from lab testing?

How long it takes to receive your lab test results depends on which test you underwent and whether the lab is backed up. Most people receive test results within two to three days, but it can take longer.

As soon as Mederi Urgent Care receives your test results, they give you a call and schedule a follow-up appointment. Your provider explains your results at that visit and develops a personalized treatment plan.
